Winter Lawn Care Tips

Before winter comes it is highly advisable to take care of your lawn before the snow piles up on it and makes handling impossible to do. Here are a couple of winter lawn care tips that will hopefully ensure that your yard will retain its beauty once spring returns.

A rule of thumb to get the good grass ready for any kind of winter would be to cut the grass shorter and shorter before the first day of winter arrives. Using a mower, one should gradually lower the cutting base each time before mowing the lawn, on the last day of fall or on the first day of winter the owner should also look out for objects that may get caught in the snow and leave imprints on the grass and may stunt it. If that so happens, that single spot with stunted grass will stand out after all that snow has gone.

The grass should be at its shortest; if the grass is left to grow  too much before winter, burrowing animals are most likely to build a warm home underneath your lawn by digging out the grass. After assuring that’s done, the grass should be fertilized enough right before snow covers it, that way, they will have enough nutrients to consume throughout the whole winter that will last until the next spring. When spring comes the grass is bound to be lush and green from feeding on all those nutrients throughout the winter season.

Depending on the type of grass your lawn has, others will advise you to instead leave the grass a bit taller than usual to enable them to photosynthesize, since day light hours seem to decrease in winter.

After all that preparation, your lawn will call for minimum attention, just a bit of raking every now and then. Don’t forget to clear your pathways from snow as this might tempt people to walk on your lawn instead. Prevent drivers from parking on your lawn, this is the easiest way to kill the good grass and pave way for weeds to overpower them.

Broad-leafed weeds may unexpectedly spring out of your lawn even though you’ve taken every care step necessary before winter comes; these prominent greens are winter weeds. These kinds of weed have the temperature as their friend, so better get rid of them before they start eating at the fertilizer that was never meant for them.

Bushes and trees with extreme foliage seem to play a role in the event of lawn patches dying out, they provide shade which is unnecessary in the role of photosynthesis and so the grass dies out in different areas. These bushes and trees should be pruned to avoid having dead patches of grass.
